A kamidana is a shelf used to worship Shinto deities. It is set up and enshrined in homes and businesses.
Shinto is a religion that developed from the influence of Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, and other religions on the belief in the eight million (yaoyorozu) gods that had been introduced to Japan since ancient times. It is unique to Japan and differs from belief in a single deity.
Ideally, the kamidana should be placed near the ceiling in a bright, clean room where the family can get to know each other, facing south or east.
